Background
The Panel Discussion, scheduled to commemorate International Women's Day on March 8, 2024, will focus on exploring the lives and challenges of women religious leaders within the framework of the 1000 Abrahamic Circles Project.
This unique discussion aims to bring attention to the experiences of Ustadzah in Islam and Priestess in Christianity as they navigate their roles and challenges. We will address the societal marginalization of women in religious leadership roles, recognizing the traditional preference for male counterparts. A central theme will be examining how much equality women religious leaders have in various aspects of life, including reproductive rights, education, and protection from violence.
Additionally, we will delve into the personal experiences of women religious leaders, providing valuable insights into the intricacies of their profession. We will also critically analyze hierarchical structures within Islam and Christianity, particularly focusing on the hierarchy of women religious leaders within these faiths.
Overall, the Panel Discussion aims to foster a deeper understanding of the challenges and triumphs encountered by women in religious leadership while advocating for their rights and equality.
Objectives
With a specific goal in mind, we want to address the global obstacles faced by women and, more specifically, to ascertain whether women religious leaders encounter similar challenges. The premise is rooted in the recognition that understanding and tackling these difficulties are crucial, with education serving as a powerful tool in this regard. The initiative seeks to enhance awareness of the significance of women’s religious leadership by dismantling stereotypes.
By sharing the life stories and challenges of women religious leaders, our aim is to go beyond the confines of textbooks and illuminate the societal narrative. This approach allows for a more nuanced understanding, drawing from the diverse experiences of these leaders in Indonesia. Our endeavor extends beyond merely highlighting existing issues; it also aims to cultivate a supportive environment.
